The school holidays are fast approaching, which only means one thing – the Telethon Kids Discovery Centre school holiday workshops are back with an exciting program of fun and educational workshops for kids!
With the workshops covering a range of topics in science, health and research, this month’s offering takes our junior scientists on a journey to discover the inner workings of the ear, learn about the composition of blood, test their lung function by launching balloon rockets, model the journey from food to poo, and compete against our very own superhero researchers.
Jam packed full of fun, the workshops run for 1.5 hours and cost $15 per child, with morning sessions suitable for kids aged 5-9 years old and the afternoon sessions aimed at kids aged 10-14 years old. All workshops include a guided tour of a real-life working lab and a chance for our budding scientists to learn from actual Telethon Kids researchers who work in the field.
There are limited spaces available for each workshop, so make sure you secure your spots early to avoid missing out!
Explore Our Ears
Put on your Safari hats and let’s explore our ears! In this workshop, we’ll take you on a journey to explore the inner workings of the ear and investigate how we use our ears to hear by creating a large-scale ear model using everyday materials. Delivered by researchers from our Ear Health team, this workshop will give junior scientists a chance to take a look inside their own ears using the latest otoscope technology. How cool is that! Suitable for children aged 5 – 9 years old.

Get a Lung of this
An extension to our popular “Power of Our Lungs” workshop, this workshop sees junior scientists learn some of the different ways our researchers monitor and test lung function through the science of spirometry. With the help of respiratory health researchers, learn how these clever machines test how healthy your lungs are. Then see how much air your lungs can hold as you compete against fellow junior scientists in a balloon rocket competition. Suitable for children aged 5-9 years old.

Poo and You!
Have you ever wondered how the food we eat travel through our bodies and give us the energy we need? Learn about the different organs that make up our digestive system in this fun and messy workshop where you’ll get to track the journey from food to poo with the help of our gut microbiome researchers. It’s a rather sticky and gross process, but lots of practical fun! This is one of our most popular workshops and tickets often sell out quickly, so secure your spots early. Suitable for children aged 5-9 years old.

What's in your Blood?
Learn about the composition of blood and the different roles each part plays by creating blood which you can take home. There’s no need to be squeamish, as we’ll be creating our blood sample using edible ingredients. Then take your learning to the next level and think like a scientist through a hands-on investigation where you’ll get to explore different blood types and their compatibility. Don’t worry - no animals or humans have been harmed in the making of this workshop! Suitable for children aged 10-14 years old.

Superhero Researcher Olympics
Test your speed and precision as a lab scientist in a range of different challenges where you get to compete against other workshop participants and even the superhero researchers themselves! Who can put on their PPE the fastest? Who has the best dexterity to use a pipette? Bragging rights are definitely up for grabs if you can beat an actual researcher. Find out if you’ve got what it takes by competing in the Superhero Researcher Olympics! Suitable for children aged 10-14 years old.
